I don't know that I would want my luggage in a bike locker, even if I could find one not in use–plus, I haven't seen a lot of unoccupied ones in the downtown area, though I just may not have noticed. There is some luggage storage at sfo, but that is very out of the way from downtown. Most decent hotels will store luggage before or after check in or check out for guests. While they are not guests at a hotel, I'm not sure how closely hotels track the guest status when storing luggage. It is often other people storing the luggage than those at the front desk. Even if they're up front about not being a hotel guest on this occasion, the hotel may not care, especially if they can show they're a frequent guest at the hotel group (maybe a starwood or hhonors member, for example). It may not hurt to try–they may get cited “policy” by the staff, or the staff may behave like real humans and do something decent for someone else. Of course a generous tip on luggage pickup would be appropriate. Or see if you have any trustworthy neighbors or friends who will be available near the time they arrive that would be willing to store the luggage. Or get them a key to your apartment or house by FedEx or through a neighbor or friend.

It's too bad you didn't ask this question before your trip as I think we would have had options for you. 1. You mention musuems. I'm not sure about SFMOMA taking luggage (that's the museum located downtown) but I know from experience that the de Young in Golden Gate Park does take luggage and you need not pay museum entrance to get to coat check. And it's free. SFMOMA coat check area is in the pre-ticketed area of the museum as well. 2. The GM of the Chancellor hotel is a DE on this forum and he has often made offers to store luggage for forum members, even those not staying at his hotel: tripadvisor.com/…42515372 3. Many large hotels will hold luggage, if they have room, regardless of whether you're staying there or not. Of course, you should tip generously in this case. (I once did this in San Diego as I was passing through returning from Rancho La Puerta and stopping for lunch at Horton Plaza. I even told them I wasn't staying there. No problem. I did tip both dropping off and picking up.) The train station in SF has never been an AmTrak station. Due to its geography the AmTrak stop is over in Oakland. I'm not sure that the CalTrain station in SF (commuter rail) ever had lockers because it wasn't a long haul station. SFO is one of the few airports around that does have storage facilities (although they charge). As you found, OAK does not nor does SAN or even LAX. As mentioned above, in this post-September 11 world, luggage storage is more problematic and needs to be planned out in advance.

It just goes to show you that some of us do use the search feature! I am not sure I saw a TQ about luggage storage. I'm in the same situation. Our apartment won't be ready until late afternoon, yet we land at 10:25 a.m. on a Saturday. I'd love to be able to go to Farmer's Market before they close down. I plan to visit the Chancellor, but am not sure how far out of the way it'll be to drop off luggage there prior to visiting market, then return to gather luggage and head to apartment in North Beach. I wish I knew that other hotels freely offered this service without being a registered guest.

Due to federal security regulations, there is no luggage storage at the San Francisco cruise terminals at Pier 27 and Pier 35. Luggage storage is available at the California Welcome Center at PIER 39, which is located approximately 0.4 miles from the terminals.

Can sales taxes on purchases made in the United States be refunded at SFO? No. State sales tax is not the same as a value-added tax (VAT). The state sales tax is a small tax on purchases or services, calculated at the time of purchase, which individual states assess and which the U.S. federal government neither determines nor receives. The VAT, on the other hand, is a national tax that is included in the actual sales price rather than at the time of purchase. The United States does not have a VAT, and the federal government cannot refund state sales taxes. State taxes are generally not charged to diplomats or employees of some international organizations who have been issued a tax-exemption card. This card must be presented at the time of purchase in order for sales taxes to be waived. (Source: United States Customs and Border Protection).

Thanks so much. Ours was kind of a last minute trip so I didn't get time to post a question and thought we would likely be able to store at our motel, at a minimum. Alas no, as it was not secure. We were staying at the Oakland Airport Hilton our last night so I had thought of possibly going there, to the Hilton in SF and asking them. My son and husband did hike down to the Welcome Center at Pier 39 and leave their bags but then had to walk back. But for the future I do appreciate your thoughts. Our son works for Southwest and thus we can fly free, as can he and his wife, so we are hoping for more trips to SF. But they will always be through Oakland as SFO has few Southwest flights and flying standby one needs to fly really early thus spending our last night in Oakland. So we're always going to need help with this unless we happen to be staying downtown.

Thanks so much for your tips.
